The Presbyterian Church expels “New School” thinkers.

1857
New School splits over the abolition of slavery.

1861
Old School splits at North & South as the Civil War begins.

1864

Southern Old and New School reunite to become the PCCS.

1869

Northern Old and New School reunite to become the PC-USA.

1871

North (Old School) and Westminster (New School) Churches merge to become the Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago, choosing Westminster’s preacher David Swing to lead. The day after their church building reopens is The Great Chicago Fire.

The Good Death

The Civil War, bringing death and suffering to harsh new heights in America, challenged and changed beliefs and understandings about what made a Good Death. National cemeteries were founded. Death notifications, grief, mourning, hopes for the afterlife, and the care of bodies were all changed.
